The Hardest Hit Campaign

There was a march organised yesterday by the ‘Hardest Hit’ Campaign. The march focused on the cuts that the government is planning to male to services and benefits that people with disabilities and their families access and are in need off.

If like myself you were not able to attend but you want to offer your support then you can visit this website and join their online campaign. One of the options available is to write to your local MP and/or to send a testimony to the campaign so that experiences, concerns and questions can be gathered and presented to the government. Take a moment if you can to read some of the testimonies yourself, and see how these cut's impact upon people's lives and what it means to them.

A disability does not have to be physical which brings me on to the new work capability assessment. Having a private company like ATOS carry out assessments, mostly physical will lead to the dismissal of numerous genuine claimants. Will those examining the claimants have the medical experience to recognise the multifaceted problems and needs of those who are mentally ill, or those who have communicative conditions. Our government are pretty keen to hand over responsibilities to the GP's as they know their communities best yet they don't trust them enough to get them to assess if their patient has the ability to work or not.

Sickness and disability does not come with a timeline, for all those who think this system and DLA is for scroungers think again. Read for yourselves how these cuts affect those in need of the services and benefits. For me this campaign is about building promoting social justice and helping to live in a fairer society and that is why I've joined the profession.
